The third World Cup in intercrosse was held in Lecco and Oliginate, Italy: April 12th - 17th, 2001.
This was the third men's and the first for women's World Cup.
Teams from two new nations attended the men's tournament:
Switzerland and Ghana.
In the end though, the final was to be played between the two favourites:
Québec and Czech Republic.
When the two favourites met in the qualifying rounds
Québec got the upper hand and won 31-28.
As usual when it comes to games between these two nations the score was
tight and The final was no exception. Québec got of with a good
start leading 14-9 after the first period, but when the whistle blew for
the second period the Czechs had turned the game around, now leading the
game 26-25.
But in the last period Québec was once again the stronger team
winning the period 10-6,
and the game 35-32 thus winning their second consecutive World Championship
title.
The women's tournament was surely a memorable one,
especially since this was the first World Cup for women.
Before the tournament the organizers had some trouble finding enough teams
for the tournament to be held,
but in the end four teams attended this historical tournament.
Here
also, the final was to be played between the two favourites: Czech Republic
and Québec.
But as opposed to the men's tournament, this tournament was not even.
The Czech Republic virtually crushed all the opponents, winning the final
34-16 and their first
World Championship title.
